A Showcase of Universal Design for Learning
What is the BC Universal Design for Learning Project?
The BC UDL project is a Ministry of Education funded initiative to assist pilot school districts in implementing principles and building infrastructure for UDL. BC teachers often find it challenging to maintain high standards in education while addressing the increasingly diverse needs of learners. UDL combines some of the current best practices already used by BC educators including differentiated instruction, performance-based assessment and the use of educational technology in order to improve student learning.
Pilot schools in the project will receive release time and training in UDL principles and technologies. They will also receive UDL Toolkits consisting of technology and software to help implement UDL. During the year, the teams will design and teach UDL lessons and contribute these to the BC UDL Learning Object Repository. They will attend onsite and online training. School districts can support their teams by providing additional release time, technology and software for student use and IT support.
How can our district be involved in the UDL project?
- The application process begins in March and the pilot districts are chosen by May.
- Begin learning about UDL principles by visiting the CAST website at www.cast.org/.
- The BC UDL Learning Object Repository at www.setbc.org/bcudl/ is open to all educators in BC to browse, download, or contribute universally-designed lessons.
- Resource links used in the project are uploaded to this website for use by all BC educators.
- Teams participating in the project are encouraged to document their experiences and share their resources in blogs, wikis, and social bookmarks. Please browse and use these resources and begin networking with teachers in the project.
